diruj Deutsches Institut für Rechtsabteilungen und Unternehmensjuristen:
diruj wins globally highly respected Head of Legal Timo Matthias Spitzer for its Advisory Board
Frankfurt, 28 October 2019. The German Institute for Legal Departments and Corporate Lawyers (diruj) can further expand its high-ranking team of leading legal experts: new to the Advisory Board is Timo Matthias Spitzer, Head of Legal Corporate & Investment Banking Germany, Austria & Switzerland at Banco Santander, S.A., who enjoys an excellent reputation in the international legal, business and academic communities. As a leading provider of specialist events, studies and media for corporate lawyers, diruj founded the advisory board in May 2019: in the future, it will ensure the quality and relevance of the topics and their offering at professional events, media, studies and training courses. The focus will always be on the practical orientation for in-house lawyers and legal departments.
Timo Matthias Spitzer is delighted to have been invited to volunteer on the diruj advisory board in order to further advance the position of corporate lawyers working as in-house counsels in Germany:
“We in-house lawyers do not only have to be legal experts, but usually also have to perform important consulting tasks on other topics within our organisations (e.g. strategy, corporate governance, human resources, compliance and budgetary issues). We have to be accountable leaders and wise counsellors. In addition, we are the central point of contact for external legal service providers, represent corporate values and are committed to society as a whole as part of our function as role models. The diruj advisory board is an excellent platform to exchange views with a strong network of colleagues from different industries, in order to jointly tackle current and future issues and develop solutions,” says Spitzer.
Spitzer currently oversees legal aspects of Santander’s global transactions with key clients in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the areas of corporate and investment banking, syndicated loans and global transaction banking (including trade, export and supply chain finance). He studied law and economics in Germany, England, France, New Zealand and Spain, is admitted as a German Rechtsanwalt and UK solicitor and speaks German, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Before joining Santander, Spitzer worked for several leading international law firms and banks in Germany and abroad. Spitzer is a regular speaker at renowned global conferences (including at Harvard Law School) and an adjunct professor for International Trade and Export Finance at the Institute for Law and Finance at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. His professional expertise was repeatedly recognized by his inclusion in The Legal 500 General Counsel Powerlist (Individual & Teams). In 2019, Mr. Spitzer was awarded both the European Counsel Award and the Global Counsel Award by the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and Lexology following the recommendations of more than 4,000 corporate lawyers from all over the world.
The diruj advisory board was founded on 10 May 2019 and started its work in Frankfurt on 20 September 2019. The main task of the advisory board is to set and review relevant topics. Thus the advisory board guarantees the quality of the institute. diruj is Germany’s leading provider of specialist events, studies and media for in-house lawyers.
